Writing Workshops to Inspire Older LGBTQIA+ Adults

A new, free virtual series hosted by the Center for Creativity will include readings, guided writing prompts and workshop sessions that will encourage communication among members of Pittsburgh’s LGBTQIA+ community.

In Our Own Write will be facilitated by Erik Schuckers, manager of communications and programming at the center, and is sponsored through a grant from Pitt’s Year of Engagement. Its focus is on people with little or no writing experience; the only requirements for participants are access to a computer and the desire to explore creative writing.

Participants will meet twice a week via Zoom to explore writing techniques as well as to read and discuss contemporary LGBTQIA+ pieces, write and share original work and meet virtually with writers. The program schedule and details are available online.

At the end of the series, participants will be able to share their work through both a collective virtual reading and a limited-edition chapbook, which will be distributed to all participants and archived in the University Library System.

Schuckers said he hopes the program will be the beginning of an ongoing program so that this writing community can grow across the region.
