Workshop for New Biomedical Investigators

The third annual Basic Biomedical Science Investigator Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh will take place Monday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This workshop is aimed at acquainting new basic biomedical researchers who conduct in vitro studies and animal studies in any discipline with the offices and committees they need to interact with at Pitt. The goal is to provide faculty and staff members as well as graduate students and postdoctoral trainees with the information they need to jumpstart their careers at Pitt.

This is the first year the workshop will be offered online via Zoom.   

“It is likely that the workshop is more important this year than in the past, as new investigators are missing hallway and lunch conversations with colleagues that are usually important in acquiring key information they need to get their started at the University,” said Bill Yates, professor of otolaryngology, neuroscience and clinical and translational science at Pitt and co-director of the Office of Research Protections. “This workshop will provide the introductions that are needed for investigators to know where to turn for key information.”

By the end of the workshop, investigators will be proficient in submitting protocols to committees and will understand how to work effectively to manage a safe laboratory in the era of COVID-19. They will also be knowledgeable about the resources of the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources. In addition, they will learn about research integrity, export control regulations, visitor policies, and submitting grants, contracts and material transfer agreements.

The workshop is free for participants, although registration is required. The Zoom link and detailed schedule of presentations will be provided to registrants closer to the date of the symposium. Registrants can attend those sessions that are relevant for their research and attendance of the whole workshop is not necessary.
