6 in-person shows to see in Pittsburgh this May

Pitt’s Cheap Seats discounted ticket program is a door to some of the city’s most vibrant performances. This May you can watch spectacular illusions, daring acrobatics, a hit musical and more.

Cheap Seats is available to University of Pittsburgh students, faculty and staff with a valid Pitt ID. Pitt people can purchase up to four tickets for each show (with a few noted exceptions) and can take non-Pitt people with, so long as you attend the performance together.

Here are six events to check out this month.

“Celtic Illusion”

Wednesday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m.

See the show that answers the question, “What if David Copperfield was a master of Irish step dancing?” Building on the worldwide acclaim of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, “Celtic Illusion” incorporates magic with heart-stopping jigs and raucous fiddle playing.

“Swan Lake” with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Orchestra

May 6-15, various times

The ballet “Swan Lake” has it all — subterfuge, sorcery and romance set to a celebrated score by Tchaikovsky. Don’t miss your chance to snap a photo with the Swan Queen 45 minutes before each performance and during intermissions. Proceeds benefit the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School.

“Won'Ma Afrika”

Saturday, May 14, at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, at 10 a.m.

Witness an African-Canadian circus troupe perform daring acrobats to the pulsating rhythm of the djembes of Guinea. This show, part of the EQT Children’s Theater Festival, is described as “embodying the strength, agility and joy of life found in African youth.”

“The Garbologists”

In City Theatre’s newest offering, two New York sanitation workers rhapsodize about their lives and search for treasures in the trash. Playwright Lindsay Joelle describes “The Garbologists” as a hopeful play that gives voice to people who sometimes feel invisible.

“Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live!”

Saturday, May 21, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Spend a tiger-tastic afternoon with your favorite kiddos. This interactive live show features all of your friends from “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” Bop along to new songs as well as fan favorites from the series, including the beloved “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

“Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations”

May 17-22, various times

No matter Pittsburgh’s weather, this hit jukebox musical will have you singing, “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day.”

Based on the life and times of The Temptations, the 2019 Tony Award winner for best choreography chronicles the group's early days in Detroit to their ascent to the top of America’s pop charts.
