Compete to clean up Pittsburgh at the Garbage Olympics

A person in a Pitt hat and shirt holds up a black trashbag

The Garbage Olympics, Pittsburgh’s annual trash pickup competition, will be held Saturday, Sept. 23.

Created in 2017, this volunteer event not only collected almost 1,000 bags of trash from city streets last year but is also a fun way to build community in your neighborhood. Prizes are awarded for most trash collected, largest team, weirdest item found and most spirit.

Visit the volunteer portal to sign up for the Central and South Oakland cleanup team and the West Oakland cleanup team.

Alongside the Oakland Planning and Development Corporation, the Central and South Oakland team will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Zulema Parklet at Zulema and Halket streets for instructions and supplies. Supported Pitt Athletics, the West Oakland team will meet at 8:30 a.m. on the corner outside of Trees Hall on the Pittsburgh campus. The cleanups will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and end at 11 a.m.
