Shilpa Sant, assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy was named a 2017 Young Innovator by Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE). Sant’s research focuses on developing in vitro disease models and therapies for stress-induced heart calcification, a condition where calcium deposits form on the aortic valve of the heart, reducing blood flow and causing heart disease.
Her work on combating this condition is featured in the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering's October 2017 issue. Each year, the editors of CMBE dedicate the Young Innovators special issue to highlighting the work of assistant professors conducting innovative bioengineering research at the molecular, cellular and multicellular level. Sant is one of 11 people to receive the honor this year.
