The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) student chapter at the University of Pittsburgh earned the organization’s award for scientific excellence. Farjana Siddiqua, president of the chapter and a graduate student researcher in Pitt’s Department of Mathematics, accepted the honor for the group at the Mathematical Association of America MathFest on Aug. 4.

AWM recognized the Pitt chapter for, among other achievements, hosting and publicly distributing a monthly seminar series with talks from female graduate students around the world. Since it started in 2021, the series has featured 32 speakers. The association recognized the series itself as well as its distribution as “an important contribution to the research community.”

The Pitt chapter also garnered the honor for its mentoring program and organized coffee meetups and other social events, where invited female scholars could share their stories and encourage and network with students.
