Pittsburgh Campus Polling Locations on Election Day: What to Expect

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, people across the country will be casting their ballots and students, faculty and staff at the University are encouraged to make sure their vote is counted. The Pittsburgh campus is home to several on-campus polling locations, and to accommodate safe and lawful voting on Election Day, additional health and safety measures will be implemented at and around these sites.

Polling locations include the first floor lobby of Posvar Hall and the first floor ballrooms William Pitt Union, as well as a campus-adjacent site at Soldiers & Sailors Hall & Museum. All voters are encouraged to wear a face covering to protect the health of themselves and those around them, but entrance to vote in the buildings without wearing a face covering cannot be prohibited.

Posvar Hall and William Pitt Union will have separate entrances dedicated to their voting sites that will be clearly marked by signage. Voter access will be limited to designated areas separated from the rest of the building that will also be clearly marked. After voting, voters must exit the building.

Allegheny County officials will be on hand to manage polling location activities that are separate from the University business, including voter registration, participation, safety protocols and wait lines. Pitt’s Office of Facilities Management staff will continuously clean and sanitize high-touch areas in Posvar Hall and William Pitt Union and bathrooms adjacent to polling areas; staff will deep clean the designated polling areas before reopening the space.

Due to the anticipated increased building activity with voting and reduced capacity limits to adhere with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, members of the Pitt community are encouraged to work remotely on Election Day when possible. Those who must be onsite for University business and instruction should enter buildings through designated, non-voting entrances. Students, faculty and staff should continue to wear face coverings, show Pitt IDs and complete thermal scanning at Building Safety Concierge stations to enter. Pitt community members who are voting and working in the same building must use the separate, marked entrances designed for voting or for University and business instruction each time they enter the building.
