Today is the Final Day to Register for Civic Action Week

As part of the Year of Engagement, PittServes in the Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Community and Governmental Relations are calling for Pitt students, faculty and staff to register for Civic Action Week set for Oct. 5-10.

Oct. 2 is the final day to register, but there will be a number of sessions every day that will be live streamed on YouTube and Facebook for those who do not register.

“This is an opportunity for us to be engaged and address critical issues that our community is facing as a result of COVID-19,” said Jamie Ducar, Pitt’s director of community engagement. “This is service in support of organizations and communities in our area that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.”

The week—which is a re-imagined, weeklong version combining the annual Make a Difference Day and Day of Caring—is an opportunity to “discover your pathway” in civic engagement utilizing the Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement concept developed at Stanford University.

A good first step for Pitt students to explore: Take the Civic Pathways Survey to see what kind of civic engagement is the best fit for you.

Throughout the week, events will be centered around one of the six areas of public service and civic engagement:

  • Community-engaged learning and research
  • Community organizing and activism
  • Direct service
  • Philanthropy
  • Policy and governance
  • Social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility

Some event highlights include Expanding the Concept of Corporate Social Responsibility: Why So Many Companies Are Talking about Sustainability on Oct. 5; The Neighborhood as Nexus: Building Health and Resilience in Communities on Oct. 7; and Caring During COVID-19: Bringing Data to Action on Oct. 9.

“There are a multitude of ways that students, faculty and staff can get involved throughout the week,” said Chaz Kellem, director of PittServes and member of the Year of Engagement steering committee. “I’m so glad to that we have teamed up with the Office of Community and Governmental Relations to bring these opportunities to the Pitt community and beyond.”

The events will be offered in a do-it-yourself format, in-person engagement following COVID-19 safety protocols and virtual opportunities.
