Since surpassing $1 billion in research expenditures for the first time in 2022, Pitt’s research enterprise has continued to grow, reaching $1.2 billion in 2024. In the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research’s 2023-24 annual report, you can meet a few of the remarkable people who helped make that figure possible with their wide variety of scholarship — and by putting those innovations into action.
“Our research programs aren’t just broad and diverse,” said Rob Rutenbar, senior vice chancellor for research. “There’s a common thread running through everything: a desire for impact.”
At Pitt, Rutenbar added in his introduction to the report, seemingly distinct fields like genomics, anthropology, cyber law, space engineering and sustainability intertwine and enhance one another, allowing creative and skilled researchers to imagine exciting new possibilities.
Browse the report website to explore stories that show how discovery leads to action — using AI to teach students art history, training police to help keep juveniles out of the justice system and preventing domestic terrorism by supporting military veterans, to name a few.
