How to keep your scooter secure on campus

An individual rides an electric scooter on a Bigelow Boulevard sidewalk, passing by a bus shelter.

More difficult to secure than cars or bicycles, scooters are an easier target for potential thieves.

Follow these tips to protect your scooter:

  1. Park wisely: Lock to a secure spot in an area that’s well-lit and in plain sight. You can also reserve a bike locker through Pitt Mobility once you’ve registered your scooter through Pitt’s Bike Index. Please note: Electric scooters are prohibited inside Pitt buildings because the batteries are potential fire hazards.
  2. Get protective gear: Use solid U-locks to block your wheels and fortify with heavy steel chains. GPS trackers and audible alarms can also serve as preventative tools.
  3. Customize your ride: Consider getting your vehicle identification number (VIN) engraved on the major parts of your scooter. Paint jobs and personalization also make it easier for your scooter to be identified.

To report a missing or stolen scooter, submit a Pitt Police report online or call 412-624-2121.
