[The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, expressing a myosin-lacZ chimeric transgene (blue)
or a Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) transgene in muscles. The helical twist of the muscles is due to a rol-6 marker in this strain.]

Description
This course is designed to examine the gene as a unit of transmission, a unit of function,
and a unit of mutation. The course emphasizes the relationship between classical Mendelian genetics
and the modern molecular understanding of gene structure and function. Recitations are used for
weekly problem sets and discussion of exercises in the Virtual FlyLab, an Internet-based simulation
of genetic experiments with the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster. Office hours are
supplemented by e-mail conferences.
Prerequisites
The prerequisites for the course are BIO SCI 0150/0160 (Intro. Bio. I and II) or equivalent; and permission of
the instructor or the University Honors College. Departmental policy requires that you have
completed prerequisites with a grade of C+ or better.
