The 6th international latin american cultural studies conference at the University of Pittsburgh april 1-3, 2010

Marcia Ochoa. Assistant Professor at the University of California Santa Cruz. Ochoa is an anthropologist specialized in the ethnography of media. Her current book project is on the accomplishment of femininity among beauty pageant contestants (“misses”) and transgender women (“transformistas”) in Venezuela. Her work focuses on the role of the imaginary in the survival of queer and transgender people in Latin America, and the place of these subjects in the nation. She works with the El/La Transgender Latina HIV Prevention Program in San Francisco, CA to develop HIV prevention programming which promotes trans-Latina participation and reflects the style and grace of transgender Latina survival.
